Pardew not confident of Cabaye stay

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew admits he is not confident of retaining Yohan Cabaye amid growing speculation of a January exit.

The France international midfielder has been heavily linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain, with the Ligue 1 champions sporting director Olivier Letang rumoured to be in Newcastle to help finalise a deal following reports an initial £14million bid being rejected on Sunday.

Cabaye has become a fans favourite at St James Park since making the switch from Lille in June 2011, and has caught the eye this term with a series of impressive performances that has seen him notch seven goals in 19 Premier League appearances.

The 28-year-old was the subject of interest from Premier League leaders Arsenal in the previous transfer window, while Ma…

The Premier League returns this weekend with a sea of fascinating games, and one that s flying under the radar is Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Burnley. Both of these clubs, who are founding members of the Football League dating back to 1888, have experienced mixed fortunes to kick off the campaign. It may seem as if they re heading in two very different directions based on that, but not all is as it seems especially when it comes to the top flight of English football.

Wolves

Under the guidance of Nuno Espirito Santo, Wolves have become one of the most interesting clubs not only in England but across Europe. The operation that has been put in place has encapsulated many fans for better or worse, and now, th…

Bournemouth 4 Huddersfield Town 0: Hat-trick hero Wilson stars for 10-man Cherries

Callum Wilson netted a superb hat-trick to help 10-man Bournemouth move clear of the Premier League relegation zone with a convincing 4-0 win over Huddersfield Town.

Without a league goal since January prior to Saturday s clash, Wilson scored twice in the space of five first-half minutes to put Eddie Howe s side in control at the Vitality Stadium.

Both goals proved controversial, though – referee Lee Probert failing to spot a clear foul in the build-up to Wilson s first, while the striker appeared to be just offside for his second.

Simon Francis dismissal in first-half stoppage time handed Huddersfield the impetus, but David Wagner s side could not find a way past Bournemouth s stubborn rearguard.

Matters were then made worse for the visitors when H…

Agger´s season could be over

Liverpool defender Daniel Agger could face a long time out of action, according to Reds manager Brendan Rodgers.

Agger was injured in a clash with team-mate Glen Johnson and stretchered off after the right-back subsequently conceded a penalty that Robin van Persie converted to seal Manchester United s 2-1 victory over Liverpool.

After the game Rodgers revealed that the Liverpool physios suspected that the 27-year-old had suffered damage to the knee and did not sound hopeful about his prospects of a quick return to action.

Daniel Agger we ll need to wait and see, he told reporters.

It didn t look so good with his knee, and some of the medics were saying he may have a problem with his medial ligament, but we ll to assess that over the next 24 hours and …

Paris Saint-Germain v Manchester City: Pellegrini backs Mangala to step up against Ibrahimovic

Manuel Pellegrini has backed Eliaquim Mangala to rise to the occasion when Manchester City face an in-form Zlatan Ibrahimovic in Wednesday s Champions League quarter-final first leg against Paris Saint-Germain.

France defender Mangala has faced criticism from some quarters over his form since moving to Etihad Stadium for a reported fee of £42million from Porto in August 2014.

But with captain Vincent Kompany (calf) leading a damaging injury list that also includes goalkeeper Joe Hart (calf), Raheem Sterling (groin) and possibly Yaya Toure (knee), Mangala is set to continue deputising against the Ligue 1 champions.

Mangala s performances may have been indifferent, but Pellegrini is confident the 25-year-old can keep a brilliant PSG attack led by the evergreen Ibr…

Bailly linked with Spurs switch

The Express understands that Tottenham Hotspur are readying a January move for Manchester United defender Eric Bailly.

Tottenham didn’t bring in a single player during the summer– the only side not to in England’s top flight though the Ivory Coast international is among their targets for when the transfer window reopens.

The twenty-four-year-old has been used sparingly this season and was substituted just nineteen minutes into Saturday’s 3-2 win over Newcastle United – at which point the Red Devils were two goals down.

In total, Bailly has played sixty-three times since signing from Villareal in the summer of 2016, with his one and only goal in that time coming in a 4-0 win at Swansea City last August.

He was part of the squad that won bot…

Stoke City v Newcastle United: Arnautovic revelling in lead role

Marko Arnautovic is confident he can continue to provide the goal threat in Stoke City s Europa League qualification bid as they host a struggling Newcastle United side seeking to ease their away-day gloom on Wednesday.

Austrian forward Arnautovic scored both goals as Stoke beat rock-bottom Aston Villa 2-1 in the Premier League on Saturday.

That took his league tally for the season to nine and the 26-year-old is enjoying his most prolific campaign since he scored 12 for Twente in the 2008-09 Eredivisie.

Manchester City s League Cup final victory means sixth place is likely to be enough to earn a berth in UEFA s second-tier competition next term, with Stoke just four points shy of incumbents West Ham.

And Arnautovic is desperate to keep contributing goals …

White and Stokes laud Dingley breakthrough following Forest Green Rovers appointment

Hannah Dingley s appointment by Forest Green Rovers has been applauded by Ellen White and Demi Stokes, with the England greats hopeful it leads to further chances for female coaches.

The League Two club promoted Dingley from her role as academy boss to caretaker head coach earlier this month, following Duncan Ferguson s dismissal.

In taking the reins at The New Lawn, Dingley has become the first woman to lead a men s senior team in English football s top four divisions.

Speaking at the launch of Pixel FC, a collective of dedicated women s football creators helping to close the visibility gap within women s football, both White and Stokes hailed the decision to appoint her.

I think it s really exciting, White said. It s something that everyone s been spea…
