Eibar 1-3 Real Madrid: Benzema stars as Los Blancos go second

Karim Benzema led the way as Real Madrid claimed a fifth successive win in a 3-1 triumph at Eibar on Sunday to go second in LaLiga.

Zinedine Zidane had been under intense pressure at the start of December due to a run of poor results, but the win at Ipurua was their fifth on the bounce across all competitions and leaves them on the tail of bitter rivals and pacesetters Atletico Madrid.

Benzema looked in the mood right from the start of an action-packed first half, the striker scoring and then teeing up Luka Modric in the early exchanges, before also having an effort disallowed for offside soon after Kike Garcia s stunning effort gave Eibar a lifeline.

Eibar certainly had their chances to clinch what had seemed an unlikely draw, but failed to take their opportunit…

Nabil Fekir ´negotiating´ Lyon exit amid growing Real Betis rumours

Lyon boss Sylvinho confirmed Nabil Fekir is in negotiations for a transfer as rumours of the club captain s impending move to Real Betis gather momentum.

The France international, who turned 26 on Thursday, is expected to be announced as a Betis player soon, although a barrier to a reported €25million move could be Giovani Lo Celso s unresolved future.

Betis are believed to want Fekir as a direct, ready-made replacement for Tottenham target Lo Celso but the Seville-based outfit are also said to be demanding €75m for the Argentina midfielder.

That fee would require the usually frugal Spurs to shatter their club record expenditure for the second time in less than a month, having brought in Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon.

Happy birthday, captain! turns 26 …

Pep Guardiola feels it is “almost impossible” for Manchester City to repeat last season’s treble-winning heroics.

City will begin the 2023-24 campaign as favourites in all competitions but Guardiola is not expecting a repeat of last term, when his side claimed Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup success.

“It feels like it finished yesterday but we start again,” said the City manager, whose side travel to Burnley for their Premier League opener on Friday.

Radrizzani defends Leeds´ Twitter mocking of TV pundit Carney

Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani has defended a club tweet that appeared to mock former England international Karen Carney.

Speaking during Amazon Prime s coverage of Leeds impressive 5-0 win at West Brom on Tuesday, Carney suggested Leeds benefitted from the coronavirus-induced Championship shutdown in March on their way to claiming the title and a place in the Premier League.

Carney said: [Leeds] outrun everyone and credit to them. My only concern would be: Would they blow up at the end of the season?

We saw that in the last couple of seasons and I actually think they got promoted because of Covid in terms of it gave them a bit of respite. I don t know whether they would have gone up if they didn t have that break.

Wolves 2-1 Luton Town: Hwang on target as Hatters´ relegation fears grow

Hwang Hee-chan ended his four-month goal drought to help inspire Wolves to a 2-1 victory over relegation-threatened Luton Town at Molineux on Saturday.

Hwang opened the scoring late in the first half at the end of a lightning counterattack, his strike deflecting off Teden Mengi and nestling in the bottom corner.

A clever set-piece routine allowed Wolves to double their lead after 50 minutes as Toti Gomes nodded in from Mario Lemina s cross, though Luton set up a grandstand finish when Carlton Morris fired home.

However, they failed to find an equaliser in the final 10 minutes plus stoppage time and stay 18th, one point adrift of Nottingham Forest in 17th. Wolves, meanwhile, move into the top half with 46 points.

Luton started brightly and Ross Barkley ca…

Clarke: No Olsson deal yet

West Brom centre-back Jonas Olsson is yet to settle a new contract with the club, according to his manager Steve Clarke.

Olsson s current deal expires next summer, and his club are keen to tie him to a new deal after the decision to not cash in on him during the last transfer window.

The club are still talking to Jonas, Clarke said. The chairman (Jeremy Pearce) and Dan Ashworth (sporting and technical director) are in negotiations.

With almost 150 appearances to his name since signing for West Brom from NEC Nijmegen in 2008, Olsson has formed a decent partnership with Gareth McAuley in the early stage of the campaign, and Clarke is hoping the defensive duo can remain intact.

Jonas respects the fact we are keeping him for the last year of his contrac…
